WHY IT MATTERS

This vision only works if we do it together, business owners, residents, volunteers, and our community leaders. When we all pull in the same direction, Plattsburg becomes a destination worth the trip.

TOGETHER WE CAN

This is where the vision either comes together, or falls apart.

Because Christmas is not just another season.

For many small businesses, it’s the most important stretch of the year.

Done right, it can:

  • bring in new customers from outside the area
  • increase foot traffic week after week
  • and turn one visit into multiple trips

LEAVE A LEGACY

Let's create Christmas memories for our kids, our families, and generations to come.

Let's make Plattsburg the place

people choose for Christmas.

PLATTSBURG

TRADITIONS

This isn’t about decorating for Christmas. It’s about creating a tradition people come back for every year.

Christmas in Plattsburg already has something most towns don’t. A real downtown. Local storefronts with character.
And a tradition that brings people together. The parade on the first weekend of December proves it.

  • People show up.
  • Families gather.

For a moment, the town feels alive in a different way. But right now, that moment doesn’t last.

This Is More Than a Weekend

The parade shouldn’t be the peak. It should be the beginning.

Because the real opportunity isn’t just hosting a Christmas event.

It’s turning Plattsburg into a place people

choose to come back throughout the season.

  • Not just locals.
  • Not just once.

But families from all over including Smithville, St. Joe, and Kansas City who make it part of their holiday tradition.

No

The goal is not just a good event.
It’s a destination people return to every December.

What That Actually Means

This isn’t about doing more for the sake of doing more. It’s about creating a feeling.

A downtown that feels like Christmas the second people step onto the sidewalk.

  • storefronts working together, not separately
  • windows filled with lights, villages, decorations, and gifts
  • interiors that invite people in, not just pass by

One decorated store looks nice.

An entire street working together becomes something people talk about.

Why This Matters

for Local Businesses

This is where the vision either comes together—or falls apart.

Because Christmas is not just another season.

For many small businesses, it’s the most important stretch of the year.

Done right, it can:

  • bring in new customers from outside the area
  • increase foot traffic week after week
  • and turn one visit into multiple trips

No

If people come for the parade and leave, nothing changes.
If they come back to shop, everything changes.

Building the Opening Weekend

The first weekend sets the tone.

And it should feel different the moment people arrive.

  • Christmas trees for sale outside
  • carolers moving through downtown
  • music playing across the area through the speaker system
  • the Community Courtyard active with vendors and families
  • Santa Claus Shaver welcoming kids and families

Small details matter. Warmth matters.

If weather allows, even simple touches like controlled burn barrels can add to that old-time feel.

If not, there are other ways to create that same sense of comfort.

The point is simple:

People should want to stay, not just pass through.

Keeping It Alive All Season

If that first weekend hits right, something important happens.

People talk.

They bring others back.
They return the following weekend.
They come back to shop, not just attend.

That’s where this becomes real.

  • decorations stay up inside and out
  • music continues through the season
  • storefronts stay engaged

Now it’s not an event.

It’s a reason to come back.

Creating Something

People Recognize

Every successful small town becomes known for something.

Something people remember.

Something they plan around.

This could be ours.

A place where people say:

“We are going to Plattsburg for Christmas.”

Expanding the Experience Beyond Downtown

Downtown should remain the heart of the Christmas season, but the experience does not have to stop there.

Perkins Park could become part of that tradition through a drive-through Christmas light display families return to year after year.

A well-designed light route through the park would give people another reason to spend an evening in Plattsburg during the holiday season.

  • themed light displays
  • decorated trees and pathways
  • music synchronized through car radios
  • and a family-friendly experience people can enjoy from the warmth of their vehicles

It would also help extend activity beyond a single weekend and encourage visitors from surrounding communities to make Plattsburg part of their holiday traditions.

The goal is not just to create an event.

It is to create memories people associate with Plattsburg every Christmas season.

A Symbol of Where We’re Headed

If we’re serious about that vision, it should show. Right now, our spaces reflect our past. But this is about building something forward. A statue of Santa Claus Shaver isn’t just decoration.

It becomes:

  • a place for families to take photos
  • something kids recognize year after year
  • a symbol of generosity, tradition, and community

Not just history.

  • Identity.

Looking Ahead

Plattsburg already has everything it needs. What’s been missing is alignment. This only works if it’s done together.

Not one store. Not a few. But a shared decision to make this something bigger.

Because if it is:

  • people will come from outside the local area
  • businesses will feel the impact
  • and the town becomes known for something it didn’t have before

Let's make this Christmas  the beginning of something special.

Let's make Plattsburg a Christmas Destination.
