PLATTSBURG VOICE

THE GOAL

Create a festival that honors tradition,

supports local business, and builds a

stronger future for Plattsburg.

Plattsburg’s Fall Festival is something people look forward to every year.

It brings the community together, creates energy in town, and gives families a reason to get out and enjoy where they live. That is something worth keeping.

The parade, especially with its strong Halloween theme, already sets the tone for the weekend. It feels like Platsburg, and it should remain a central part of the event.

But if we are being honest, there are parts of the current setup that could work better.

Right now, the festival feels spread out in some areas and overcrowded in others. Vendors are placed along 2nd Street behind the downtown buildings, which can feel out of the way. Main Street, where people naturally want to gather, becomes congested with rides. Food vendors are split across locations, and the overall flow makes it harder for people to fully enjoy what is there.

It is not a lack of effort. It is a matter of layout.

A good event layout does not just bring people in.

It makes them want to stay.

Re-centering the Festival Around Main Street

Main Street should feel like the heart of the event.

Instead of being crowded with rides, it should be a place where people can walk, explore, and spend time. A vendor street down Main, along with the connecting cross streets, creates a more welcoming and natural experience.

  • local vendors become easier to find and support
  • foot traffic moves directly past storefronts
  • more people are encouraged to stay longer and explore

When people come to a festival, they want to walk, grab something to eat, and take it all in. That experience should feel open and inviting, not cramped.

Creating a True Carnival Experience

Main Street should feel like the heart of the event.

Connecting the Experience

With the carnival located outside of downtown, the next step is making sure everything stays connected.

Simple solutions like tractor hay rides between the carnival and Main Street create a steady flow of people between both areas.

Families can park once, enjoy the rides, and then head downtown to walk the vendor street, visit shops, and spend more time in town.

That movement turns a short visit into a full experience.

Supporting Local Businesses First

The goal should always be to support the businesses that are already here.

By shifting most food vendors toward the carnival area, downtown restaurants have a better opportunity to serve customers during the event. At the same time, Main Street becomes focused on local vendors, small businesses, and storefront activity.

  • local restaurants see more traffic
  • small businesses gain visibility
  • the economic impact stays within the community

This approach makes sure the people who invest in Plattsburg year-round benefit the most.

Making the Event Work for the City

Events like this should not just bring people together. They should also support the city itself.

There are simple ways to do that without placing additional burden on local residents or businesses.

  • parking near the carnival area creates a new source of revenue
  • a targeted vendor tax for non local vendors keeps things fair
  • increased attendance leads to more spending across town

These are practical steps that help make the event stronger and more sustainable over time.

Creating an Atmosphere People Remember

There is also room to build more into the experience itself.

Local businesses can be part of the event in new ways. Restaurants and gathering places can host live music at scheduled times, creating energy without overwhelming the event. A balanced approach to entertainment helps create an atmosphere where more people feel welcome.

The goal is not to turn the festival into something it is not.

It is to take what already exists and build it into something people talk about, return to, and bring others with them to experience.

Growth does not have to overwhelm Plattsburg.

It can be designed in a way that actually protects it.

Looking Ahead

This is not about replacing the Fall Festival. It is about improving it. It is about creating better flow, better space, and better opportunities for the people and businesses that make Plattsburg what it is.

Because when an event is set up the right way, it does more than fill a weekend.

  • It brings people together,
  • supports the local economy,
  • and it creates something the community can be proud of.
